Blogger now schedules future-dated posts

Scheduled post publishing, which we talked about testing on Blogger in draft last month, is now live for everyone. If you set a post’s date into the future, Blogger will wait to publish until that time comes.Have you ever wanted to announce something on a certain date but knew you wouldn’t be at a computer to make a post? Or you wanted to keep posting regularly but knew you’d be on vacation for a few weeks? Scheduled post publishing is here to help you out.Scheduling a post is easy to do: on the post editor page, click the “Post Options” toggle to show the “Post date and time” fields. Then, type a post date and time that’s in the future. When you click the “Publish” button, your post will become “scheduled.” When the date and time of the post arrive, it will be automatically published to your blog.

“Scheduled” posts appear in your Edit Posts list alongside your drafts and published posts. To un-schedule a post, simply save it as a draft any time before it gets published.

One quick note: If you want to give a post a date in the future but have it appear on your blog now, you’ll need to add in an extra step. First, publish your post with the current date and time. This will make it appear on your blog. Then, edit the post to change the date into the future and publish it again.We don’t re-schedule posts that are already published, so the post will stay on your blog but sort to the very top. The same is true of future dated posts you’ve already made, so there’s no need to worry about your existing posts disappearing, or having your blog assaulted by unplanned entries in, say, 2027.

UK universities at risk of losing foreign students

UK universities could risk losing lucrative international students as a result of the Bologna process to harmonise university education in Europe, a report from the Higher Education Policy Institute warned today.

The thinktank's report argues that UK universities have recruited overseas students remarkably successfully, but could lose out in an increasingly competitive market.

The Bologna process means that other European countries are providing the bachelors then masters degree structure that was unique to the UK.

"That will erode one of the competitive advantages that we have had," the report warns.

"It is unfair, perhaps, and untrue, but there are concerns about whether the UK is fully committed to the Bologna process. If our competitors succeed in creating an impression of non-Bologna compliance then this could prove damaging even though accusations of non-compliance would be untrue."

The issue of whether UK university degrees comply with Bologna applies particularly to one-year masters courses, which have been seen as a "particular strength and a unique selling point".

"Although there is no doubt that these courses are Bologna-compliant, we are out of step with most European systems, and there are undoubtedly some that are trying to undermine the credibility of our one-year courses.

"It is important that they should not succeed, since these have become a mainstay of our international student recruitment. To lose this market will be hugely damaging to the financial viability of our universities."

Hepi says UK universities have increased their income from overseas students despite a drop in market share because international students see them as giving quality education and because they teach in English and offer relatively short degrees.

But England is one of the most expensive countries in which to study. "UK degrees are marketed as a premium product for a premium price। So far, we have been able to maintain our position, but if price sensitivity becomes an issue, this may not be sustainable," the report warns.

Two AIFS Diversity Scholarships for 50% of the program fee and round trip air fare are awarded, one per semester. Three runner-up AIFS Diversity Scholarships of $2,000 each are also awarded each semester.

To be considered for the AIFS Diversity Scholarship, applicants must submit the scholarship application materials in addition to the AIFS study abroad application and the required application fee of $95 by April 15 for Academic Year/Fall Quarter/Fall Semester or October 1 for Spring Quarter/Spring Semester. Each semester AIFS offers 40 scholarships of $1,000 to students who demonstrate high academic achievement and write an essay addressing “How study abroad will impact my academic and personal growth.”

To be considered, you must submit the AIFS scholarship application, the program application, the required application fee of $95, official transcripts of all college records to date and an academic reference.

Completed scholarship and program applications must be postmarked by April 15 for Academic Year/Fall Quarter/Fall Semester or October 1 for Spring Quarter/Spring Semester. Students must meet the minimum requirements for the program to which they are applying, have at least a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA, show leadership potential and be involved in extracurricular activities centered on multicultural or international issues.

a. Next Generation Networks (NGN)

Creation of a collaborative forum for deliberation on emerging technologies and developments through participation by Govt., ministries, commission (BTRC), Operators & Service Providers, Consumers and other stakeholders as per Section 33 Subsection 1 Clause (h) of Bangladesh Telecommunication Act, 2001 on priority basis.
Deregulation of all types of communication between IP devices immediately.
Study & analysis of different International standards/ protocols/open interface for the purpose of inter-operability between IP Networks and Legacy networks
Further necessary steps to be taken to deregulate any device to any device communication using IP.
Utilization/exploitation of NGN technology to solve interconnection problems on top priority.
Need to have a national NGN policy that defines the various services and applications and also emphasizes on the capacity building in NGN field through training and awareness building.

b. Broadband

Creation of a national broadband policy to define broadband and its applications, objectives, targets and capacity building through training, including encouragement of development of local content on top priority.
Government to facilitate the creation of a common national information highway/infrastructure through public? private, (public sector/private sector) partnership.
Incumbent resources are to be unbundled for the service providers to facilitate faster proliferation of broadband.
Consideration of permitting resale of telecoms services to make broadband affordable.
Allocation of spectrum resources to broadband services on priority basis.
Unused and/or under utilized spectrum to be re-farmed for broadband services in addition to identification of extra frequency bands for these services.
Existing allocation of spectrum to be made available in public domain.

c. Next Generation Internet (IPv6)

Government to consider mandating IPV6 compliance in all future procurement of IP based products.
Need for awareness building, including training for industry, in the technology of IPV6.
Formulation of a IPV6 forum for Bangladesh by the ICT industry with ISP association taking a lead and initiating the process.
Need for creation of Bangladesh National Internet Registry (BNIR), an Autonomous, Not-for- profit and Industry- participative body, for better and efficient management of IP addresses in the country.
Involvement of Academic/R&D institutions for setting up of test beds/projects for IPV6 trials in the country.

Doing his Music Thing

As a fan of gadget blogs such as Gizmodo and Engadget, Tom Whitwell started Music Thing in 2005 after realising that there were no similar blogs for music gear. The blog showcases unique and strange instruments, and traffic grew as gadget sites began to link to Music Thing. Now, the site receives tens of thousands of visitors each day.

In July 2007, Tom wrote an article for The Times discussing his passion for his blog's content, despite the low AdSense revenue he had earned since joining the program in August 2004. His friend James noticed the article and encouraged Tom to make a few changes to improve his earnings. According to Tom, "this was the incentive to tidy up my template a bit, and think more about ad placement."

Tom started by moving the ad unit on his homepage above the fold and opting into image ads, to ensure that all available ads would compete against one another. On his article pages, Tom added link units at the top of each page and placed a medium rectangle below each article. In addition, he removed the borders from his ads and adapted the colours to blend better with the site.

Using custom channels, Tom was able to compare the effectiveness of his ad units on his article pages. Tom notes that "the block I'd considered my main ad (the skyscraper on the right) was much less effective than I'd thought. As Google suggested, the medium rectangle that I placed beneath each article is the biggest earner." Tom also found that small changes could go a long way -- he made a few template changes to ensure that the highest performing ad unit appeared first in the HTML code, which helped increase his earnings.

"It took me a few hours to optimise the site, after reading a few blogs about AdSense, looking at the advice from Google and my friend, and trying a few template changes," Tom says. "The results were amazing - with no extra traffic to the site, my average daily earnings have increased by over 500%." Although Tom doesn't plan to quit his day job any time soon, he notes that "every little bit helps."

After this experience, Tom recommends that other publishers "follow the optimisation suggestions as long as they leave you with a site you're happy with. If you lose confidence in your own site, you'll irritate your audience and lose interest in what you're doing. But at the same time, make sure you watch your statistics, so you know what works and what doesn't."
